Firewella and firewalls in general

Ayoo,

I've been keeping an eye on these guys https://firewalla.com/ and their product seems good.

However, I want to open a dicussion for home firewalls in general. What would be a thread model requiring a firewall? What are the vulnerabilities from which such device could protect you?

What are other options on the market? And pls, don't say "buy a resberry or microtik and configure it yourself", I am not that technical... :D

Firewella seems like a cool gadget but I am not really sure if I need it considering my thread model. Note: I also have a normal life... windows 11 (I know...), smart air conditioners, TV, PS, etc.. any normal electronics in the house hold. Whats your opinion?

So you can try using gufw or ufw. Very simple firewall, just as the UncomplicateFireWall and GraphicalUncomplicateFirwall.

If you need a hardware firewall, ⚠️pfSense⚠️ or ⚠️OPNsense⚠️ are both open-source, and time-tested. I've never heard of Firewalla before, and I can't find too many reviews about them. Based on your normal life threat model, I think a software firewall would be more than enough for a small home network. If have an OpenWRT router, LuCI has a very robust firewall built-in with ⚠️excellent documentation⚠️ if you need it. I'd only recommend a hardware firewall if you are really interested in networking, and want to tinker with it.
