To be honest, it's one of the best captchas I’ve ever seen. I’ve also spent a lot of time trying to create the "perfect" captcha, but in the end, the users hated all of them.

They want something fast and simple, like the classic captcha where they just click a circle to continue.

Can't please everyone at one time they all had to get use to the clicking a circle, or counting the shapes to know which one was most used. I'm not a fan of following the crowds I like to do things different.

How would this pair with 'find the chain of 4 land mammals' or 'find a chain of 3 xyz's'? It might be a bit harder but would also be more expensive to bypass

I don't fully understand your question? This was made because I don't like to be the same as everyone else that uses those types of captchas.

Choose the letter that's repeated 3 times in a row either diagonally, horizontally or vertically

It would be A because

Now do that with animals, say the A is a lion and the X is a xenomorph and so on

This would add more uncertainty for the AI attempting to crack it

And that method is pretty much used already like the original post says, It's made to be different your thinking too much like the captchas you see on the day to day markets.

BlackOps for example has the select the image that only appears once and I'm pretty sure I've seen it on other markets too pergaps Argo etc.

The point here is you can create an OCR for those websites to identify, just the same way you would be able to make an OCR to identify the word but with multiple cells to be clicked and the chances of it being diagonally, horizontally or vertical and the fact a letter can be displayed more than once you would have to work pretty hard to match them all up together and line it up and press exactly the correct order where as if you are referring to the captchas like on the markets I've just explained about you only need to click once.

Which means in fact this is a more advanced captcha than the ones on those markets.
