A regular public ip is not something a malicious actor can duplicate easily unless they are close to you geographically. Vpn's replace your normal public ip with it's own, so everyone connected to it uses that public address. Sites check ip's along with cookies to reinforce that the cookies originate from a "trusted" location.

Relevancy, quality, and trustworthiness are deeply interconnected because information cannot be truly high-quality or trusted if it does not directly apply to the matter at hand. Think of them as a three-legged stool: if you remove one, the usefulness of the information completely collapses

Mullvad is one of the best VPNs out there from a privacy standpoint. I'd still recommend chaining proxies over using a single entity but if you want to use something that's cross-platform and won't give you a headache when you install and set it up, use Mullvad.
