It can't be proven, but it's silly not to act as though the external world exists. If the external world doesn't exist then none of your choices can possibly matter, so you might as well act as though you assume it does. It's Pascal's Wager, except unlike Pascal's wager it actually works because there's a fundamental asymmetry between the possible scenarios.
