How to add/update your PGP Key to your tforum account and finding the Verification PIN

For this tutorial you’ll need a tforum account.

This tutorial is created using,

• Tails 6.18 (2025-07-25) with persistent storage

• Kleopatra v. 3.1.24.221203 (22.12.3)

• KeePassXC 2.74

Create a Passphrase with KeePassXC for your PGP Key Pair

1. Open KeePassXC

2. If you have a database, go to step 3. If you don’t, click on "Database" and "New Database…" and complete the process.

3. Click "Entries" and "New Entry".

4. At "Title" type a recognizable name e.g. OpenPGP Key - {your tforum username}.

5. Type your tforum username at "Name" or just leave it empty.

6. Click on the "Password" input field and click on the small square icon (or CTRL-G) to open the password generator.

7. Choose whatever settings you want to use. Password or Passphrase. Which characters and how many.

8. Click the revolving arrow icon to generate a new password/passphrase. The higher the entropy bits, the harder it is to brute-force.

9. Click "Apply Password".

10. Click "OK" and save your database (CTRL-S) to your persistent storage.

11. Leave KeePassXC open. Do not close it!

Create a PGP Key Pair Using Kleopatra

1. Open Kleopatra.

2. Go to "File".

3. Go to "New OpenPGP Key Pair…".

4. Typ a name at "Name" (i.e. your tforum username).

5. Leave the "Email address" field empty.

6. Check "Protect the generated key with a passphrase".

7. Go to "Advanced Settings…".

8. Choose whatever "Key Material" you would like to use, however in this tutorial, leave it on RSA and + RSA and choose how many bits. Choose "4096 bits" for both RSA and + RSA for the most secure option.

9. Change "Valid until" to whatever you like. Uncheck the box to make the key valid indefinitely.

10. Click "OK" and again "OK".

11. Switch to KeepassXC and right clicking on the entry for this key-pair and copy and paste the password/passphrase and paste it in both input fields and click "OK".

Exporting your Public Key

1. On the Kleopatra interface, select the tab "All Certificates".

2. Right click your created key-pair and click "Export" and save the filename_0x(random_characters)_public.asc, again to your persistent storage.

Opening your Public Key

1. On Tails, go to "Applications", "Accessories" and start Text Editor.

2. In Text Editor open your public key on your persistent storage.

3. Leave Text Editor open. Do not close it!

Update your PGP Public Key to tforum

1. Log in to your tforum account.

2. Click on your tforum username (upper right corner) and select "Edit Profile".

3. Then "Settings" and scroll down to "PGP key".

4. Go back to Text Editor and select all data (CTRL-A) and copy (CRTL-C) and paste (CTRL-V) it to the "New PGP Public Key" field on the tforum website and click "Update PGP Key".

Decrypt the Verification Message

1. On the "Verify PGP Key" page, you’ll see in the "Verification message" field, an encrypted message. This is not your public PGP key, but a message encrypted with your public PGP key, which needs to be decrypted in Kleopatra.

2. Select all the data in the "Verification Message" field (CTRL-A) and copy it (CTRL-C) and paste it (CTRL-V) it into Kleopatra’s notepad on the tab "Notepad".

3. In Kleopatra, click the tab "Recipients" to be sure the "Sign as:", "Encrypt for me:" is checked and, if you having multiple key-pairs, the correct key-pair is selected.

4. Go back to the "Notepad" tab and click "Decrypt/Verify Notepad".

5. Type your password/passphrase and click "OK".

6. Now copy the PIN to "Decrypted verification PIN" field on the tforum website and click "Verify PGP Key".

7. Your PGP Key is now update e.g. added to your tforum account.

Check the PGP key in your Profile

1. Click again on your tforum username (upper right corner) and go to "Profile".

2. Go to the tab "PGP Key".

3. The displayed "PGP Key" is your public PGP key.

bitwarden but id suggest trying to get keepass to work, dont just give up

so many things dont run as smoothly as they should, get used to atleast attempting to fix problems instead of looking for alternatives
