Hi all, I am new to tails os. I am trying to set up xmpp over tor in tails os. I have read about services like jabber calyxinstitute and others, but don't know if any of them support .onion in 2025. Are there any recommended xmpp onion servers still active in 2025 that works well in tails? If anyone here is using pidgin inside tails, i would really appriciate any beginner friendly tips.

Thank y'all

Pidgin sucks use Gajim

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any solid .onion XMPP servers at this time. The couple I've tried were too unreliable.

Why do you want a .onion provider?

You don't need 6 nodes.

👆🏻 This is true about public XMPP onion servers, they come and go, and reliability can be an issue. But running your own Prosody XMPP server as an onion hidden service is a solid option and works great, i use it everyday! Self-hosting with Prosody gives you full control, real privacy, and reliability, since you’re not dependent on anyone else’s uptime or policies.

It’s straightforward to set up on any Linux system (including Tails, Debian, or Ubuntu), and you can federate with most clearnet XMPP servers if you want, or keep it onion-only.

If you need a step-by-step guide, I wrote a full walk through on my profile.

And fully agree on Gajim, it’s much better than Pidgin for OMEMO and modern XMPP features.

https://xmpp.is has an onion server as well. I use it (it's in my profile), and its been up and running for quite a while now. Not sure if they are taking registration anymore though. Just try to register through your XMPP client.

Anyways, the onion server/address for it is:

6voaf7iamjpufgwoulypzwwecsm2nu7j5jpgadav2rfqixmpl4d65kid.onion

Good luck
