The scale of ddos attacks on hidden services

For those who have hosted a larger onion site (like tforum) that has been subject to ddos attacks and are open to sharing this information - what scale are we actually talking about here? how much bandwidth, how many requests per second? what is the bottleneck? is it network saturation (bandwidth), is it the application layer, is it number of connections, is number of circuits, is it the tor daemon itself (cpu load)? do the relays usually give up first or is it the hidden service itself? is it the introduction points? been curious about this for some time.

I'll approve, it's a good discussion. For reasons, I doubt anyone is going to give you specific numbers though.
