My new website allows you to check if the onion site is up or down.

http://5f2jwwojzi5fljxqqmityqlses3leqchjapgmdawc2n3i3tgmmleuuyd.onion/

Just paste URL, solve captcha, press the button and you will get the results.

Additionally by checking URL you will be informed if you are checking the official URL of the service.

You can check it by pasting tforum URL as an example.

I hope you will like it.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

Totally missed this, it really deserves some feedback!

Compared to a list periodical checked onions this has the small advantage is that any onion address can be checked. However, the rest of the advantage is of course on the server side, it's a lot less requests for you :)

I assume you still have some kind of caching system to prevent too much requests to the same service. So here's a suggestion: you could by default display the last 5 cached requests plus timestamp. uniquely filtered by address. When service is down and more users will visit your tester, the result might already be visible.

This way you might save the user a copy+paste+click and still keep the requests from your side minimal.

And I absolutely love the output format! Also great that you check against a list of known addresses.

Thank you for very great feedback. I love the idea with 5 cached requests with timestamp. I will definitely implement this in the near future.

Ok, done. Please check. I hope you will like it. There is a new container for last 8 URL checks with timestamp.

First of all: I think this is the very fist time I got proper feedback on a feature suggestion on tforum, thank you so much xD

The result is almost as I envisioned it! I was originally thinking you could have replaced known services with their name instead of a censored addresses. I'm not sure if you have the bare names readily available.

But I think for the user this shouldn't matter. They should be aware of what address they'd like to look up. Plus most bigger services have recognizable vanity addresses anyway.

I do have a bugreport now :/

For some reason your checker won't connect with a number of services of which I'm 100% sure they're up. Including tforum. I'm positive all of these services are working:

archi...2oiad.onion was down at 2025-03-16 10:59:23 UTC

pitch...d27yd.onion was down at 2025-03-16 10:59:04 UTC

5f2jw...euuyd.onion was up at 2025-03-16 10:54:54 UTC

I'm not an expert in onion routing, but it is possible the circuit is broken or something? I guess you could refresh the circuit on specific conditions, such as when a services goes from up to down.

I can't map it to names for the same reason you mentioned :)

I also mess too much with some code that's why there were too many false positives. My bad.

I fixed it, now it works fine. Thanks for the feedback, and I am happy you enjoy it and you are happy about fast response and implementation :)

Yes, some of the popular services have registered names as official URL, like tforum, Pitch etc. I can register your URL in the backend. Just send me a message or post a comment here where the URL is signed with the same PGP key of the site you own.
