I'm new to all of this. Is it really necessary to use tails from a usb? I'm in a situation where my only way to access the DW is from a MacBook using Tor. Can someone help me understand why this is risky?
Thanks!
Because you're probably using your personal machine that has personal details on it connecting to your home Wi-Fi network leaking all sorts of shit about you. Easy catch.
Plus, you're leaking the user-agent telling every website and onion service you're using a macOS computer which, if someone like me was targeting you, I would know what type of payload to send your way. There's many reasons why you don't want to use macOS and Windows. It's an OPSec problem for a reason.
Tails forces everything through Tor and gives you a barrier of protection. macOS isn't insecure per se but it's sending so much information about you back to Apple servers while you're browsing on Tor connecting everything to yourself.
Keep shit separate from your personal computer but if you're using a macbook then you should be at minimum using Whonix in a VM. If you're running a macbook with anything "M" series this won't be possible so you'll need an older macbook.

I recommend using a virtual machine to access the deep web using a VPN.
Really depends on your threat model.

I really don't get why everyone is so paranoid, saying "use Tails, use a VM, etc." If you are a normal consumer and not some big-time drug vendor, it doesn't fucking matter. As if any government is going to waste resources and burn a backdoor in Windows (which all cost money!) just to catch a consumer. I have yet to hear about a single consumer who got caught because they were using Windows. At most, you should use VeraCrypt or something similar. Most other things are just overkill and a pain in the ass.
Thats right, I dont think they care that much about someone buying a g or 2 or an eight ocasionally. So installing all those is an overkill. Just use feathers. But i guess if you are a big time vendor you should take a different kind of precautions, i guess.
Yeah, but how many people on here that follow the advice given are big-time vendors? I think it's just massively overcomplicating things if you tell that to some random guy that's going to order 1 g of coke or something to install tails or a VM or god knows what.
