Necessity to run your own node as a vendor?

VPS not necessary? My own node from my local spot? Should I have a computer that runs solely the node?

i dont think the VPS is necessary or even a good idea. if you want it isolated you could configure it as a separate local VM with LUKS encryption and make sure to run the node through tor.

paying for a VPS to run a node that you need to connect to externally seems silly.

When using Monero GUI on Whonix and setting up a full node, how you should configure the local node securely for this setup? If there is a guide please point me to it. Thanks in advance.

i could be wrong but last i looked the monero gui isnt working with the new LXQt version of whonix.

it used to just work with the older Xfce version, but Xfce is no longer supported and cannot be updated.

It's really a very big security layer, for vendors it's mandatory. Monero nodes can see when you connect, and which blocks you are scanning, and even over Tor this can become a consistent unique pattern over time. Using your own node, no external service sees your wallet scanning, and no one can attempt correlation attacks based on your usage.

Also, with your own node, you are essentially verifying the blockchain yourself, and not trusting any third-party to do it for you. When you send funds, your transaction is sent through the node first.

I used "flatpak install flathub org.getmonero.Monero" to install it and it worked on the newest Whonix version.

There is no "over time", the requests cannot be correlated.

nice i didn't realize there was a flat pack for it. prior you could just download it and launch it

its really best to locally host rather than use a vps. the whole point is you're not sending your transactions to be read by some server owned by someone else. plus the full monero blockchain is 250GB+ so that's a lot of monthly cash just to store the node. it's easier to spend a couple hundred on an older machine with larger storage. you'll probably want an nvme drive or something fast to store it tho thats the biggest bottleneck in my experience

It's absolutely necessary to run your own node as a vendor and super simple to do. Just download Monero GUI, select advanced mode, Select local node, then configure the local node for tor. If you need to save space or dont have 170gb+ to run a full node, you can prune it to save space. /

The instructions on the clearnet are straight forward. It may take a little trial and error on your part.
